Coal Creek Taproom & Eatery – The Secret is out!

Rumors have been swirling about a new and innovative bar and restaurant coming to Cedar City, Utah. We can now confirm: the buzz is real, and the venue is officially under construction.

I had the opportunity to speak with the renowned Richard Berk at the annual Digestive Disease Week (DDW) 2025 in San Diego, following the Dr. Edward Berk Lecture. While our discussion initially centered on medical innovations—particularly in the field of diabetes—Richard shared an unexpected and deeply personal revelation. Originally off the record, he later allowed me to share the exciting news.

Although this new venture doesn’t relate to gastroenterology—my usual beat—it’s a rare glimpse into Richard Berk’s personal life. Richard has partnered with a colleague to launch a game-changing taproom and eatery in the heart of Cedar City.

Cedar City, known as Southern Utah’s gateway to Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks, draws a record number of visitors annually. Soon, both locals and tourists will have access to a world-class destination for food and drink. The upcoming Coal Creek Taproom & Eatery promises an impressive lineup of craft beers on tap, signature cocktails, and cuisine so exceptional it could make celebrity chefs envious. Whether you’re playing darts, enjoying live music, or chatting with locals about hidden gems off the beaten path, this venue aims to be an unforgettable experience.

When asked about an official opening date, Richard wouldn’t commit but hinted that the launch is slated for this summer. He also mentioned plans to be in the area for the Fourth of July—a time when he traditionally attends the Brian Head Fire Department’s fireworks show and stays at his Presidential Suite in the Copper Chase Condominiums.

I asked Richard about the inspiration behind this endeavor. He shared that it’s a tribute to his late son, Josh, who passed away from leukemia and cherished Utah’s great outdoors. “This is a memory in the making,” he said. “Something that touches my heart and brings joy to others who find their way to Cedar City.” Anyone listening to Richard’s heartfelt words would have struggled to hold back tears.

Richard has promised me an invitation to the grand opening—and you can bet I’ll be there.
