Cedar City’s New Year’s baby Jesus arrives

CEDAR CITY — The first baby born at Cedar City Hospital in 2019 arrived early Wednesday, more than one day into the New Year.

Jesus Uribe Orozco was born at 6:38 a.m., weighing 6 pounds, 12 ounces, and 19 inches long, according to a media release sent by hospital spokeswoman Becki Bronson.

Jesus’ arrival came after a bit of an unusual lull of more than 48 hours, including all of New Year’s Day. The hospital’s last birth of 2018 happened at about 5 a.m. Monday, Bronson told Cedar City News.

Jesus is the son of Cedar City residents Cecilia and David Orozco. He is the family’s fifth child, joining older siblings Jazmin, 11, Maritza, 10, David, 9, and Monserrat, 6.

Mom and baby are reportedly doing well, especially considering that the birth happened fast, Bronson reported.

“I started having contractions at about 3 a.m. this morning,” Cecilia Orozco said, adding, “and then came to the hospital about 5:50 a.m. But by then, I had already dilated to a 7, and there wasn’t time even for an epidural. Forty minutes later, Jesus was born.”

Cecilia and David Orozco, who have lived in Cedar City for 13 years, thanked the doctors and staff in the Women and Newborns department at Cedar City Hospital.

“I want to thank Dr. (Travis) Bilanzich, and all the nurses and staff at Cedar City Hospital,” Cecilia Orozco added. “They treat you so nice and help you so much. It’s been exciting to have the New Year Baby.”

When asked how many babies had been born in 2018 at Cedar City Hospital, Bronson said the number has been the same for each of the past two years.

“Interestingly, in 2018 Cedar City Hospital had 842 births, which is the exact same number of births Cedar City Hospital had in 2017,” she said.
