Local students make ornaments featured in D.C. display

CEDAR CITY — This week, local Utah students are creating Ornaments for President Park in Washington, D.C. as part of the 95th annual National Christmas Tree Lighting display.  The ornaments will be hung in one of 56 trees in the America Celebrates display at Presidents Park in D.C. until Jan 1st.

Cedar City middle school and high school students have designed the ornaments to mimic the unique and beautiful local Southern Utah landscape.  The students learned and applied many new techniques  such as Tyvek layering to create depth in the landscape inspired designs.  The delicate and meticulous work took the students on average over 14 hours to complete each ornament.

Southern University and the Southern Utah Museum of art hosted the event, providing supplies and instruction. The students creations will be proudly displayed at the National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony set to kick off later this month in Washington, D.C.
