Suspected distracted driving leads to rollover 100 feet down embankment

ST. GEORGE — A woman who police believe was distracted while driving rolled her car 100 feet down an embankment off the side of state Route 14 Sunday afternoon.

The woman was driving a Nissan Ultima on SR-14 near Duck Creek Village at about 3:30 p.m. when she started to drift off the road. When she overcorrected a couple of times, the car rolled a few times off a hillside and came to rest on its roof, Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Nick Street said.

The driver was wearing a seat belt and suffered minor, “non-incapacitating” injuries to her upper body from the crash, Street said. She was transported to Cedar City Hospital by ambulance.

Street said he believed distracted driving may have caused the woman to go off the road.

“The contributing circumstance was a failure to stay in the lane,” Street said. “My guess would be she looked away from the road for a minute – possibly distracted.”
