Region 9 girls basketball: Hurricane, Snow Canyon and Cedar all win on the road

CEDAR CITY — Visiting teams fared well Thursday, as the second night of the Region 9 girls basketball season resulted in Hurricane, Snow Canyon and Cedar picking up wins on the road.

Hurricane 61, Canyon View 35

At Canyon View, the Lady Tigers started strong, holding the home team to a single field goal in the opening quarter while roaring out to an early 19-5 lead.

During the second quarter, Hurricane continued to apply the defensive pressure, eventually building a 32-7 lead. Canyon View ended the first half on a 7-2 run to pull within 20 at halftime, 34-14.

Hurricane head coach Franci Homer said her team has been looking to improve its defense.

“We need more intensity in our defense, and that was a team goal we wanted to accomplish,” she said.

Throughout the second half, the Tigers stayed comfortably ahead, eventually winning 61-35.

“Rough night. We have lots to work on,” said Canyon View head coach Jaycee Barnhurst afterward. “We need to find a way to believe. In my opinion, that’s our biggest struggle right now, believing we can beat Region 9 teams. We do well against nonregion teams.”

Senior forward Bryn Erickson led Hurricane’s offensive assault, scoring 18 points on nine field goals, mostly from close range. She was joined underneath by fellow post players Hailey Homer and Kandalyn Hinton, who added 8 and 6 points, respectively. Guard Madi Hirschi swished four 3-pointers and finished with 12 points.

“We played like a team,” coach Homer said. “We executed our game plan well, passed the ball well and found the open person.”

The Lady Falcons were led in scoring by sophomore guard Addison Newman, who finished with 12 points. Ashlyn Banks and Noelani Hansen each contributed 6 points, and point guard Jordan Nielson added 5 points for Canyon View.

Canyon View next plays at Desert Hills on Tuesday, while Hurricane’s next scheduled game is next Thursday, Jan. 10 at home vs. Snow Canyon.

Snow Canyon 46, Pine View 39

The Snow Canyon Warriors finished strong down the stretch to outlast the Pine View Panthers 46-39.

Snow Canyon jumped out to an early nine-point lead in the first quarter, but lost a bit of momentum during the second period when Olivia Harris accidentally collided with a referee during a fast-break attempt.

“She ended up losing the ball and instead of scoring, we ended up committing a foul. The lead went from 10 with the potential to extend it, down to 7,” Snow Canyon head coach Ryan Rarick said. “We also dealt with Tylei Jensen being in foul trouble most of the game, which hurt us especially tonight, as we were down two rotation players due to injury.”

Harris and Rachel Durante ended up with 14 points apiece to pace the Lady Warriors, who were bolstered by the rebounding of Hallie Remund and the inside defensive presence of Traia Andrews.

“Tonight, Snow Canyon was the more disciplined team. Hats off to them for playing a good game,” Pine View head coach Chris Brinagh said afterward. “We fought as hard as we can, and the girls played scrappy. We still had a shot to win it. Taking nothing away from Snow Canyon but we’re in Region 9, where every game is going to be a dogfight.”

Snow Canyon’s next game is at home against Dixie on Tuesday at 7 p.m., while Pine View plays at Cedar that same evening.

Cedar 57, Desert Hills 42

At Desert Hills, Cedar Lady Reds stayed unbeaten on the season with a 57-42 win over the Lady Thunder Thursday night.
